Devon was developed as a model town at a pioneering time in the history of Alberta’s energy economy. The vision, priorities and strategies outlined here is designed to capture and focus the “New Energy” of Devon in charting another pioneering course into the next chapter of Alberta’s economic history.
Devon developed the Green Strategy in 2016 as a tool to enable its growth as Alberta’s first net-zero-energy community by 2050. Net zero can be defined as a reduction in energy demand supplemented by an increase in renewable energy supply. The strategy aims to achieve this goal by focusing on six priority areas:
Energy efficiency of buildings
Development of renewable energy
Energy-efficient transportation systems
Waste and landfill reduction
Conservation of natural assets
Encouraging the growth of a green economy
The Green Strategy and the development of the Green Economy are related to the goals of Economic Development, specifically for cleantech companies. Capitalizing on Devon’s wish to diversify its economic base and the Devon Research Park, the Town should explore incentive programs for businesses to further green their operations. As businesses seek to convert, other local businesses may rise to the challenge of conducting the work; thereby growing the green energy cluster.
